Our Story
The "Nursery on Prairie" has been the longest-operating plant nursery in the Inland Northwest for over 30 years. In 1989, Jay Decker, a local landscaper, recognized a gap in the availability of commercial-grade landscaping and gardening supplies in the region. This realization prompted him to shift from landscaping to the nursery business, leading to the establishment of Northland Nursery. Jay and his wife, Dianna, were dedicated to providing top-quality plants and materials to support local landscape contractors and empower homeowners in building and maintaining their dream gardens.
Over the years, Northland Nursery has become the go-to destination for expert advice and guidance on a variety of unique elevations, zones, soil types, and weather patterns. North Idaho and Spokane County feature an array of microclimates and zones, and the knowledgeable staff at Northland, with decades of local experience, can confidently assist you with your landscape design and maintenance needs.
Collaborating with leading plant and material vendors across the western United States, Northland takes pride in offering high-quality perennials, shrubs, trees, soil, bark, rock, fertilizer, plant care products, and more. While most landscape contractors can pick up and transport their materials, it quickly became clear that individual homeowners often lacked that option. As a result, delivery services were introduced to ensure the availability of plants and materials throughout North Idaho, extending south to Latah County and west to Spokane County and surrounding areas.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Northland remained open, serving both individuals and landscape companies across the region. At the end of that challenging year, Jay Decker decided it was time to retire, but knew the perfect person to continue the business and uphold his legacy. Lisa Christensen, who had been with Northland since her college days, celebrated 25 years as a vital team member and had risen to the position of General Manager, proving she was ready to take the reins.
At the beginning of 2022, Lisa and Anthony Christensen purchased the nursery. Jay Decker continues to live on-site and can often be found sharing his extensive knowledge with customers or enjoying some "tractor therapy" to keep his skills sharp.
Although there is new ownership, Northland remains committed to providing superior products, unmatched expertise, and genuine customer care.
